Toverland renews whitewater course Expedition Zork

Dutch theme park Toverland is taking advantage of the coming winter to upgrade the Expedition Zork whitewater course. The attraction, which opened in 2004, will be given a new storyline and an interactive ball track. The extensively themed attraction will then reopen in the spring of 2022.

In recent years Toverland has undertaken various projects to restyle the indoor themed area Wunderwald, in which Expedition Zork is located. “Toverland’s quality standard is getting higher and higher and we think it is very important that our older themed areas are also included in this,” explained Jean Gelissen Jr., general manager. “We want to continue to invest and right now, the renewal of Expedition Zork fits best with our strategy.”

The wild water rapids attraction features an image of Zork, a mysterious green swamp creature. “However, this background story has never been explored in depth,” says Peter van Holsteijn, senior designer. “In the new story of Expedition Zork, we have connected all existing elements of the Wunderwald. An Alpine village, an eccentric inventor, a log flume and an unknown mountain monster.”

In Expedition Zork, visitors step into a transport system devised by inventor Maximus Müller to search for the mythical creature Zork. During this expedition, visitors find out if Zork is the dreaded creature from the folktales, or if the mystery is different. “With this, all the puzzle pieces fall into place,” says the designer.

The interactive ball track Maximus’ Wunderball will also be added to the decor of Expedition Zork. At the start of the ball track, visitors can purchase Toverland wooden balls, which they can then roll through a huge marble track as many times as they want. There are a total of two different courses with a total length of 125 metres.

The redesigned Expedition Zork and Maximus’ Wunderball will open in the spring of 2022. Construction work will start after the Christmas holidays. During the period that Expedition Zork is closed, spinning coaster Dwierwind will be offered as an alternative attraction.
