Grand Pier duo receive Queen’s honour

The brother and sister that rebuilt the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare, England, have been awarded the MBE (Member of the British Empire) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Kerry and Michelle Michael restored the 1904-built pier and added a major new pavilion building featuring various amusement rides, arcade games and catering facilities following a devastating fire in the summer of 2008. The new look structure reopened in October 2010.

“To be recognised and honoured for our work in re-building the Grand Pier is very humbling and was completely unexpected,” says Kerry Michael. “After the fire the main aim was to get the Grand Pier up and running as soon as possible. It is an iconic landmark and has huge importance for the town. This fantastic honour is recognition for everyone who was involved in the design, building and re-opening of the Grand Pier in record time.

Weston-super-Mare is located in Somerset, on the south west coast.
