Tripsdrill, the Germany family park near Stuttgart, this week ramped up the thrill factor when it unveiled Mammut – the first all-German wooden coaster to be built in living memory and the park’s largest investment to date.
A collaboration between Ingenieurbüro Stengel, Holzbau Cordes and Gertslauer Amusement Rides, Mammut can ride up to 900 passengers an hour using two trains and was officially opened to the public on April 28. The 850-metre long coaster reaches speeds of up to 80km/h but, to appease the park’s family audience, also features magnetic brakes to slow the trains down.
The ride is built of pine sourced from the German state of Hessen (Hesse) and suits its setting – surrounded by forests, meadows and wine hills – perfectly. “The purely wooden construction of Mammut literally offered itself to us,” says Tripsdrill managing director, Helmut Fischer, who can be seen above riding in the front seat.
More pictures and a full ride profile will appear in the June 2008 issue of Park World.
