Singapore Flyer
World's tallest wheel (for now)
Published:  19 March, 2008

Offering a “moving experience at every turn,” the Singapore Flyer officially became the world’s newest tallest Ferris Wheel when it opened to the public on March 1.

The 165-metre-tall ride has been developed by the Great Wheel Corporation, the company behind a string of planned international observation wheels including the Great Wheel of China, which will snatch the “world’s tallest” title when it opens next year in Beijing.
Located in the burgeoning Marina Bay area, the Singapore Flyer is a S$240-million (US$170m/ €115m) project. At the base of the attraction is a three-storey retail terminal complemented by a lush Asian rainforest and cascading water displays.
From the comfort of 28 air-conditioned capsules, riders are treated to a panoramic 360-degree view of Marina Bay and as far Malaysia and Indonesia. A basic adult ride costs S$29.50 (US$21/€14) and last half an hour.
Tickets for the ride have been available since last year via exclusive sales and marketing agent Adval Brand Group. OmniTicket Network supplied the ticketing and access control systems. Although sales have been encouraging, 20% of tickets will be reserved each day for walk-up crowds.
“The Singapore Flyer heralds a new age for tourism in Singapore,” believes Adval Brand Group managing director, Patsy Ong. “Its unique and exhilarating top-of-the-world experience make it a compelling, must-see visitor destination in Asia.”
It is anticipated that up to 2.5 million visitors will ride the wheel in its first year. A number of corporate and VIP guests were able to celebrate Chinese New Year on the attraction when it soft opened in February. An grand opening is now planned for April 15.
