Steel tears as Steel Pier closes
Published:  01 October, 2006
The Steel Pier in its heyday with the Cantannosos - but now Trump wants it back

The Steel Pier at Atlantic City, New Jersey, is to cease trading as an amusement park, having been earmarked for redevelopment by the neighbouring Trump Taj Mahal Resort. The Catanoso family has operated the Steel Pier as a amusement park for 15 years under contract with Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc but its contract will not be renewed.

“We are not happy to lose the pier,” acknowledges Anthony Catanoso, Steel Pier’s president. “It's going to be a big loss to the city and the children.”

Catanoso had been active in charity work in Atlantic City, otherwise famed for its gambling, often opening the amusement park to local children for free and to reward students for perfect school attendance. That will disappear when the pier closes.

“My feeling is, as long as there's a beach and boardwalk here, there should be family entertainment,” he adds. “We are that family entertainment. We will hate to go. We'll miss Atlantic City, and I think the families will miss us.” The Steel Pier encompasses 150,000 sq ft, extending 1,000 ft out over the Atlantic Ocean. It has been home to over 25 rides, ranging from the Crazy Mouse, America’s first ever spinning coaster, to the Rocket, an openseat slingshot that launches riders 225ft into the air. There is also a double-deck carousel, log flume, gondola wheel, various other adult rides, go-karts and a collection of unique kiddie rides. Games of chance and endless food choices were also available. Now all this must be removed. While it was their single biggest operation, the Steel Pier was one of four locations operated by the Cantanosos. They and their partners now plan to expand their projects in Seaside Heights and Wildwood in New Jersey, and Ocean City in Maryland. They continue to be a big part of the industry and expect to announce a new amusement venture soon. Watch this space.
