Sofia Land redevelopment plans
Published:  21 August, 2007

A number of options are currently under consideration for the former Sofia Land site in the Bulgarian capital of the same name. Whatever the outcome, a new amusement park looks unlikely.

Sofia Land opened in September 2002, and after a number of successive ownership changes closed last October. Located in one of the fastest growing and priciest areas of the city, demands for alternative use of the land have remained high.

A decision on a change of use for the 3.5-hectare site is expected in October, and options include high rise or multi-use buildings or even a shopping mall. The Sofia municipality has hinted that only 10% will be given over to redevelopment, leaving the remaining land for a park with trees and benches – but no rides.

In the meantime, local reports suggest that the Sofia authorities have received planning applications for two new amusement complexes on the outskirts of the city. In terms of land value at least, it appears Sofia Land was just a little too close to the city centre.
