China Tourism & Attractions Summit

Following the success of the third China Themed Attractions Summit last summer, the Avail Corporation is to stage a fourth conference in Shanghai this July. The renamed China Tourism & Attractions Summit (CTAS) will take place at a new venue, the Sofitel Hyland Hotel on Nanjing Road, and there’s also a new chairman: Gary Goddard, replacing Tony Christopher of Landmark Entertainment.

Senior attractions operators, owners, developers designers, suppliers and investors, as well as government representatives, are expected to attend and debate what most still agree if the most exciting market in the world right now for the leisure industry. As well as the obvious places like Honk Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, where the Olympics are now only one year away, billions of dollars are also being poured into the developments of second tier cities such as Chengdu, Tianjin and Qingdao.

The CTAS kicks off on Thursday, July 5, with a keynote presentation on the state of China’s tourism industry from Zhang Jianzhong of the China National Tourism Administration Committee. Later in the morning, Gary Goddard will explain how to develop engaging and interactive attractions. Other highlights include:

THURSDAY, JULY 5

1130: Exploiting Unique Characteristics to Create Activity-Based Attractions. Edward Fuller of Madame Tussauds (China & Hong Kong) will look at how to ensure your attraction builds on unique features to promote both its own content and the city itself.

1645: Doing Business in China. A panel discussion tackling such topics as managing expectations, stakeholders and how to involve the local government and authorities.

FRIDAY, JULY 6

0915: Theming China. Shawn McCoy of Jack Rouse Associates will highlight how to integrate Chinese themes with engaging and relevant attractions.

1045: Scale – BIG is Good. Special emphasis on Expo events. Delivered by He Siyuan, deputy director of the Hangzhou World Leisure Expo executive committee.

1545. The Future. As China becomes increasingly accessible, what will attract people to its cities? How will it be affected by globalisation and what new technologies are in store? Chris Conte, CEO, Electrosonic.

Over the two days additional speakers will include Dao Shuming, Shanghai Tourism Administration Committee; Ugo Portillo, Action Park; Wang Dawu, Chinese Tourism Association; Zheng Jianping, China (HK) Tourism Designing Institute; Josh D'Amaro, Hong Kong Disneyland; Bill Calderwood, Hong Kong Ngong Ping 360; and many more to be confirmed.
