Dickens World gets go-ahead
Published:  01 October, 2006

Thanks to a £62 million (€90m) finance deal from the Bank of Scotland, work has begun on the three-and-hall-acre Dickens World in England. Dedicated to the life and times of author Charles Dickens, it is expected to open next March.

The undercover visitor attraction will use new technology, books and stories to bring to life the sights and sounds of 19th Century London, and will be located in Chatham Maritime, once known as Chatham Docks. Dickens himself worked in nearby Rochester and worked as a Naval Clerk in the dockyard.

Attractions at Dickens World will include both rides and educational attractions, together with a Victorian music hall that will host evening shows and corporate events. The architecture of the time has been reproduced and will feature cobbled streets and decorative lighting, while costumed characters will entertain guests.

As part of the redevelopment of the area, there will also be a Dickensian themed retail area, restaurants and bars, together with a multiplex cinema.
