Kansas eyed for new Legoland outlet
Published:  01 March, 2007

RED Development, an American shopping mall developer, is proposing a new $561 million development outside Kansas City, Missouri, that would include a 100-acre entertainment district anchored by a Legoland attraction, Sea Life aquarium and a resort hotel.

Also included will be around 80,000 sq ft of “festival” retail including shops and restaurants and a 536,000 sq ft shopping center/office park. It is thought the Legoland development will be adopt the new ‘half-day’ Discovery Centre format being pioneered by owner Merlin Entertainments.

RED is seeking $139.3 million in tax-increment financing from the city of Lee’s Summit and $43.6 million in tax-increment financing from the state to subsidise development of Legoland and the aquarium. Legoland/Merlin will contribute about $45 million.
