Bringing animation to life

Advanced Animations is now combining CGI animation with animatronics

For over 20 years, Advanced Animations has provided animatronic figures and characters to the theme park, casino, museum and retail industries but now it has added a new twist to its offering …digital animation.

Used for a long time in the film and video game world, CGI (computer generated imagery) is a popular medium with today’s youth, and according to Advanced Animations’ CEO Peggy Toth, it should be an essential ingredient for attractions operators too. “The industry has to compete with CGI animated films and video game consoles like PS3, Xbox and Wii,” she tells Park World.

Now Advanced Animations is working alongside sister company Nexus Digital Studio, which has been in the digital visual effects business since 2002, to combine 3D CGI digital animation with its world-class animatronics.

“We recognise that there is a growing need to use this format in the experiences offered by the theme park industry,” continues Toth. “Visitors are demanding a truly immersive environment with a lot of action. Blending animatronics with CG animation can draw the visitor into sensing they’ve been dropped right into the midst of the theme. Such experiences are difficult to deliver simply with static scenic, a few simple motions and a ride track.”

At this year’s IAAPA Attractions Expo in Atlanta, Advanced Animations demonstrated a simple 3D CGI digital animation on a 60-second loop alongside some of its renowned animatronics, bringing its booth to life.

Such applications, says Toth, offer greater flexibility. “You can change the complete theme of a dark ride for example,” she notes.
