3DBA puts theatre in motion
Published:  01 January, 2007
Circumotion combines a giant motion base experience with 360-degree projection

Roger Houben of 3DBA reckons he has found another concept that, like the 3D/4D theatre, can compete with a major rollercoaster for marketing potential.

The Circumotion, conceived by Falcon’s Treehouse, is a giant motion base surrounded by 360-degree projection that will offer unparalleled 3D and 4D experiences.

“For example, if a fish is swimming towards you, you will then be able to see it behind you as it passes,” he describes. “The Circumotion will be attractive to the family but still have enough thrill for the teenager.”

Up to 100 viewers – or ‘riders’ – will sit in circular rows facing inwards, and the dome-like screen lowered down over them before the experience begins. As the 3D film is projected around them, 4D effects and subtle movements will simulate events in the story. “It won’t be motion for motion’s sake,” adds Houben.

Circumotion will be project managed by Falcon’s Treehouse, with 3DBA responsible for marketing and sales. Suppliers include Falcon’s Treehouse (attraction design & film development), nWave Pictures (media production), Kraftwerk Living Technologies (AV system & 4D seats) and Rexroth Bosch (ride system).

The first installation will be made at a park in Europe. A second Circumotion will be delivered to a park in China, where 3DBA will also supply its first 3D dark ride.

Meanwhile 3DBA collaborator nWave Pictures has already sold “seven or eight” licences for attractions based around its forthcoming 3D motion picture Fly Me to the Moon.

“3D attractions are unique,” concludes Houben. “More and more parks are starting to understand the value of tailor-made products.”

Since it was founded in 3DBA has sold 15 4D theatres, 8 Splash Battle interactive water rides, as well as concepts like the Mountain Glider and Sky Glider.
