Opening 2008: The Great Beijing Wheel

Bosch Rexroth, of Holland, has been awarded the contract to supply the complete drive and control system for the world’s latest largest Ferris Wheel.

The 208-metre high construction is destined for Beijing and is a project of the Great Wheel Corporation, which also has plans for giant wheels in Berlin and Dubai. The Beijing ride will be sited in the Chinese capital’s Chaoyang Park and is expected to start turning in time for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The scope of the work to be completed by Rexroth includes project engineering, shipment and installation of the complete drive/control systems, and boarding stations.

Rexroth has pedigree in this field after working on the London Eye, and reliability and safety will be key requirements for the Great Beijing Wheel. The powerful drive system, which includes a back-up that ensures reliable operation even if a fault develops in the main circuit, will be almost maintenance-free. It comprises 32 hydraulic motors driving 32 special tyres that make contact with the wheel and keep it turing at a constant speed of three revolutions per hour.

To ensure safe and efficient loading and unloading of guests in all 48 capsules, Rexroth will also provide a sophisticated automated boarding system, located on either side of the wheel. As a result, up to 5,760 passengers per hour will be able to enjoy the fantastic views over Beijing.

*Bosch Rexroth was recently announced as one of the key supppliers to the Best Simulator Experience of 2006, as recognised by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) in its upcoming THEA Awards. The experience in question is the Great Glass Elevator finale to the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ride at Alton Towers n England. Bosch Rexroth delivered all the ride’s motion platforms, which are integral to the experience.

In 2006, the company also implemented new software for its motion ride platforms. “The result is a motion experience which enhances the film without the guests realising they are actually riding a motion platform, a true creation of the ultimate illusion”, notes Bosch Rexroth’s Ronald Yntema.
