Three new themed areas will be added to Hong Kong Disneyland (HKDL) over the next five years, bringing the total number of attractions, entertainment, and interactive experiences at the resort to over 100. The plans were approved recently by the Hong Kong SAR Government.

Two of the new areas, Grizzly Trail and Mystic Point, will be exclusive to the Hong Kong park for the first five years after their respective openings. The third, Toy Story Land (pictured above), will be exclusive within Asia for the same period.

Highlights include a major new attraction called Big Grizzly Mountain Coaster in Grizzly Trail, a Mystic Manor haunted dark ride in Mystic Point and a U-shaped shuttle coaster and parachute ride in Toy Story Land. The three new areas will be located outside the existing park perimeter, just behind Adventureland.

“This substantial investment represents our continued commitment to and confidence in Hong Kong Disneyland and solidifies our partnership with the Hong Kong government helping assure the resort’s long-term success,” remarks Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. “The expansion will further enhance HKDL’s position as a world-class family tourist destination.”

The expansion should also go some way to silencing critics who accuse the park, with some validity, of being too small. The new offerings will open in phases until 2014 and are expected to create the equivalent of 3,700 jobs, including 850 within the first year of construction. After the completion, the total number of “cast members” at HKDL will swell to more than 5,500.
